The Plan for Storyboarder V2.

With over 50,000 people using Storyboarder after 1 month, we still have so much we want to build.

First, the important features…

Most of these upcoming features were already on the roadmap. However, from the feedback we’ve received, we’ve bumped up some features based on what we’re hearing from your feedback. Thanks!!!

Additionally, when we started building Storyboarder, we built it with live action storyboarding in mind. Now that many animators are using it, we want to be thoughtful about features useful in animation, but still keep it a storyboarding tool, and not an animation tool.

1. New drawing system

For most people, the drawing system in place works fine. Our goal was to get something serviceable out as soon as possible so people could start boarding. However, there are many features we’ve been wanting to have, and the performance for older computers is just unacceptable.

  • Way faster performance
  • Ability to zoom and pan the drawing viewport
  • Lasso selection for repositioning, scaling, and rotation
  • Add a pen to lighten instead of darken
  • Straight line drawing
  • Textured brushes

2. Ability to manipulate layers

We are still thinking about how to do this. We are mainly thinking about reusable layers from board to board, like backgrounds. To maintain UI simplicity, this will likely not work like Photoshop.

3. Audio insertion

Ability to insert audio triggered at a specific board.

4. Ability to choose your own Image Editor

If you prefer to use an editor other than Photoshop, you’ll be able to choose any editor you’d like and those edited files will be linked to you boards.

5. PDF export settings/customization

You’ll be able to configure the layout of the PDF export. Select number of columns, rows, what data you want to show, etc.

6. Editable Keyboard Shortcuts

Choose your own keyboard shortcuts for actions.

7. Ability to export a video

Export an mpg video of your timed work without having to go into Final Cut or Premiere.

8. iPad input support

You will be able to use your iPad Pro with Pencil to draw in Storyboarder. This is not a standalone app, you will connect to your iPad to Storyboarder on the same local network.

9. User modifiable clipart

Transitions, reusable drawings, background elements, etc.

10. Final Draft script support

You’ll be able to board based on a Final Draft script (easily the shittiest script format in screenwriting). Seriously, why do people keep on buying this shit software? If you are an engineer working at Final Draft, we’re hiring! JUST KIDDING - YOU SUCK.

11. Change FPS to whatever rate you’d like!

You asked for it, and it’s really easy to add!

Rethink Shot Generator

Draw a simple scene. Shot generator will attempt to identify where the human model and camera should be placed to replicate your drawing.

AR camera placement. Use your phone to position the camera for the shot generator in real time. Take shots and send them to Storyboarder.

Facial tracking applied to models. Want a specific facial expression? Make it using your mobile phone’s camera. It will be applied to the main character of the shot generator.

Build a richer community

The most beautiful result of building Storyboarder has been seeing a rich community form. With the popularity of the tool itself, we can feel the demand for the tool, but we are also feeling the demand of artists to connect with each other.

We want to build a community directly into Storyboarder and Wonder Unit tools. For example, we want you to be able to share your sequences privately to the community for comment and review. Currently, there isn’t a great way to share boards. We would like to change that.

If you guys have any ideas here, we’d love to hear them!

The Fun stuff

We’re thinking about adding a game built into Storyboarder. It will present you with 3 random sequence ideas. Then you draw the sequence. You can take as much time as you need. When you’re done, it submits your sequence for others to guess. Next, the game will show you a random person’s sequence and you can guess what’s going on in it. You’ll be able to see a person’s sequences as a gallery. It’s a great way to see how people draw and work.

iPad Version?

50% of the emails we get are: “WILL THERE BE AN iPAD VERSION?” We’ve been working on planning one out. The main problem is the cost and development time that it will take to make it. I’m afraid that the iPad version might have to be a paid app. And the larger question is, what would you pay for such an app? I’m not sure what the demand would be for Storyboarder on iOS and at what price. Can you let us know?
