Wonder Unit seeks a Sequence Director, New York

Wonder Unit, a startup movie studio seeks a
Sequence Director, (someone with a background in directing, cinematography, storyboarding, or layout), to help with development and direction of our first feature film in New York City.

What is a Sequence Director?

Great question! You will be using software to direct and layout shots to visually tell a story. The Sequence Director will work as a collaborative member of the story team, working in the writing room, visually directing sequences using software we've developed: Shot Generator within Storyboarder.

Imagine being in a room of writers and other story artists. We might be talking about a specific scene or sequence in a story. It would be your job to take the general idea of the sequence and set up each shot to tell that sequence of the story. Then you'll pitch the scene/sequence back to the team and we will collaborate to make the scene better. Or – the director might give you some scenes to quickly set up and insert shots.

You basically open a scene, add characters, put them in roughly the right place, set up the camera, and insert the shot into Storyboarder. Add the shots you need to tell the story. It's like playing a videogame that's not fun to most people except you. You love using it, because you can make believe all day! Using the software is pretty easy to use, and will be further developed with your input. Here's a video that roughly explains how it works:

Responsibilities / What You Will Be Doing:

  • Collaborate directly with writers and Director to brainstorm ideas, shape the film through visual sequences, to develop framing, staging and timing.
  • Tackle challenging story and structure problems and maximize creative value.
  • Exercise a keen eye for creative continuity and practical construction.
  • Meet project deadlines and milestones as set by Directors, and Head of Story.

What you bring with you:

  • Understanding of cinematic framing and dramatic story structure
  • Experience working on a dramatic production
  • A knack for working with other people in a fast-paced environment
  • A spirit of collaboration and creative problem solving to brainstorm challenges
  • Ability to work digitally using our custom software (It's easy)
  • Ability to take constructive feedback and work to the team vision

Ideal candidate is punctual, organized, smart, creative, and has a good sense of humor. You should have experience in directing, cinematography or storyboarding – or experience in animation layout.

This job is not for everyone. If you're the type of person that starts sentences with, "Well usually, this is how it's done...," you can go ahead and fuck off. This job is very atypical for developing a live action feature film. We are not doing things the way things have been done before. We are building the future.

If you are interested, and if you live in New York City, please send your resume, and a link to your most compelling creative work. Did I mention that this job is in New York City? That's in New York, in the United States.
